Right off Concord Pike sits this little hotdog and chicken shack (what a combo) called Johnnie's. The walls of the joint are covered with photos of smiling customers doubling down on their 13" dogs as well as their other specialties. Their menu includes all variations of hot dogs that you can think of, some classics that you probably know like the Chicago Dog, the Chili Cheese Dog and the Texas Tommy, but their menu also includes other fun creations (or variations that I've just never heard of) like the Southern Comfort and the Tijuana Dog. My dad RAVES about this place and makes my mom stop here any and every time they're in the area. We have yet to try their fried chicken, but it looks pretty good.
I got the 13" Texas Tommy, wrapped in bacon, deep fried and then covered in cheese wiz. I'm very picky about cheese wiz-- I know cheese wiz is a cheap alternative, but some cheese wiz just does not compare to others in quality. Johnnie's has some top notch cheese wiz, and the Dog was still juicy but not greasy after being deep fried. The dog itself has a circumference of about an inch, so this bad boy had some girth aside from length.
Bonus points for also having veggie options, I love places that are mostly meat based fare, but they make an effort to include everyone. -

I love hot dogs! For the whole 6 and a half weeks of Lent I have been dreaming of visiting this place and trying "Delaware's Best Hot Dogs" or whatever title this business was awarded. I thought the place was very clean, appealing, and smelled amazing from the food cooking. I ordered a jumbo hot dog and fried Oreos and unfortunately I was disappointed.
The jumbo dog was just ok, but extremely greasy. It caused the bun to be soggy, and even the bun was tasteless. I ate half and gave the rest to my dog. I thought maybe the "best hot dogs in Delaware" would taste a lot better. Yet, they were nowhere close to the hot dogs I had when I was little girl outside of Home Depot. That man and his hot dog truck deserve best hot dog in Delaware. I have yet to have a hot dog that compares.
The fried Oreos were disgusting. There was way too much batter and too little Oreo. And they were a bit over fried. I used to make fried Oreos and sell them to my friends in college. Mine taste better than these.. Maybe they should switch to using Double Stuf Oreos.
All in all, probably won't be returning, but I'm glad I tried it. Friendly staff and nice decor. -

I was really excited about this place based on the reviews. It was first dining experience in PA. I had the sweet Italian sausage and also the Kennett Square Dog
My order:
Kennett Square Dog (grilled mushrooms, onions, swiss cheese and steak sauce)
This dog was very average. I had high expectation for the dog, but it did not deliver. Just a regular hot dog with some toppings. I think the dogs I've made in the backyard on the grill have more taste than this.
Sweet Italian Sausage Sandwich (sweet Italian sausage with peppers and onions)
I originally ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich but it does not come with grilled peppers and onions so I switched to the sweet Italian. Just like with the dog, this sandwich was average, nothing special. It was a lot of bread in comparison to sausage and peppers. I ended up cutting the bun in half and it was still a lot of bread.
Was in town for business and decided to give this place a try. Perhaps I did not order the right thing. Their fried chicken is supposed to be pretty good so maybe I should've tried that. Not impressed with the hot dogs and sandwiches. -

I was in Delaware area and kept hearing how amazing this place was.
So i decided to try it. The service was really fast and the staff were very friendly.
The food was mediocre though. I ordered the Chicago style dog and it was just your basic hotdog. Felt like there were more toppings and bread than the actual hotdog.
But everyone deserves a second chance so I will return to taste something else off the menu! -

A little pricey, I'll admit. But I do love Johnnie's. I enjoy the Monkey Hill a lot which is probably the most obscure menu item. Besides that I'm a big fan of the Seattle Dog and Baltimore Dog. Hot dogs aren't something I'm always in the mood for but I could probably always go for one from Johnnie's. And of course some fries & a float.
